They Are Swallowing Each Other.

Thomas Nast, being a staunch supporter of incumbent Ulysses Grant in the 1872 presidential election, depicts here Liberal Republican candidate Horace Greeley being forced into a symbiotic “swallowing” of certain unappetizing constituent groups, namely the KKK and Tammany Hall.  Incidentally Greeley dies before the electoral college casts its votes.  Grant wins his second term easily.
